Hydroseeding sprays seed, mulch, and a binder onto prepared soil. It can cover a large or steep area faster than laying sod, but it is not a published San Diego price per square foot. Bloom Pro SD matches homeowners with licensed independent contractors. We do not hydroseed, guarantee germination, or satisfy a grading permit for you.

Confirm any erosion-control condition with the city or county that issued the grading permit, or with the civil engineer on the project.

What a hydroseeding quote should list

  • Seed mix (turf-type versus native or other specified mix) and application rate
  • Soil prep and grading already done versus included
  • Tackifier, bonded fiber matrix, or erosion-control blanket
  • Irrigation for germination: existing system versus temporary
  • Access for the tank truck
  • Follow-up visits, if any

A slurry-only pass is not the same job as prep plus blanket plus watering setup. See sod installation cost when you are comparing cover methods. Sod can be usable sooner. Hydroseed needs a germination window the contractor should write down. Do not treat 4 to 6 weeks as a guarantee.

Hydroseeding versus sod

Choose hydroseeding when the area is large or steep, you can water as specified, and the mix matches the use (turf versus natives). Choose sod when you need immediate cover and the grade can hold sod. Neither method is a turf-rebate payout. SoCal Water$mart pays to remove qualifying turf under current rules, not to install hydroseeded grass. After removal, planting still has to meet the program if you want the rebate. Use the official estimator.

Slopes and estate lots

Steep grades may need a blanket or matrix so seed does not wash. That is a design and permit question, not a 3:1 rule from this page. Individual container plants are a different scope from broadcast seed. See California native plants for plant-selection caveats.

Grading permits

Erosion control on disturbed soil is often a permit condition. Hydroseeding is a common way contractors meet it. The trigger, mix, and timing come from the issuing agency. Budget the contractor’s itemized erosion line, not a blog example lot.

Frequently asked questions

How much does hydroseeding cost in San Diego?

It depends on mix, prep, slope protection, irrigation, and access. Compare itemized bids.

Is hydroseeding cheaper than sod?

Often on large areas, but only if you compare equivalent prep and watering. Sod has a different establishment cost.

How long until it looks like a lawn?

Follow the seed label and the contractor’s watering plan. Germination time varies with mix and weather.

Does hydroseeding work on slopes?

It can, with the erosion-control products the site and permit require. It is not automatic.

Do turf rebates cover hydroseeding?

They pay for qualifying turf removal and a qualifying replacement, not a hydroseed invoice by itself.

Is hydroseeding required for a grading permit?

Only if your permit says so. Read the condition.

What’s the best time of year?

UC San Diego County Master Gardeners point natives toward the rainy season. Turf seed timing belongs to the species and the label.
