Sod Install

Sod installation across San Diego County.

A fresh sod install takes a tired lawn from worst-on-the-block to done in a weekend. We remove the dead lawn, grade, amend soil, lay sod tight, and set the watering schedule that keeps it alive through rooting. Variety choice matters in SD — we pick for your sun, traffic, and water budget.

What's included in this service?

  • Remove existing lawn (sod cutter for thatch, grub, or dead turf)
  • Grade for drainage — 1-2% slope away from the foundation
  • Amend soil with compost and starter fertilizer tilled 2-4" deep
  • Lay sod tight-seam, staggered brick pattern, rolled after install
  • Variety matched to site — Bermuda/Bolero for sun and traffic, St. Augustine/Palmetto for shade tolerance, Tall Fescue blends for cooler coastal microclimates
  • Irrigation zone test and run-time adjustment for the rooting period (daily first 10 days)
  • Rooting schedule handoff — what to water, mow, and fertilize in week 1, 2, and 4
  • Cleanup and haul-off of old turf, pallets, and debris

When do you need this service?

  • Lawn is more than 40% bare dirt, weeds, or dead grass
  • Heat and drought killed the existing lawn (common after a bad summer)
  • Re-sodding after a pool install, addition, or major renovation
  • HOA requires a uniform lawn and overseeding is not cutting it
  • Selling the house in 60-90 days and need established lawn fast
  • Switching grass type (from Bermuda to St. Augustine for a newly shaded yard)

What do homeowners ask about Sod Install?

Which grass type is best for San Diego?

Depends on sun, traffic, and water budget. Full sun, hot inland (Poway, Escondido, El Cajon): Bermuda (Bolero, Tifway) or Zoysia (Empire, El Toro). Coastal or partially shaded (La Jolla, Encinitas, Carlsbad): St. Augustine Palmetto or a tall fescue blend. Low water, low traffic: Zoysia or Native Blend. We walk the yard and pick based on where the sun actually lands.

How soon can I walk on new sod?

Light foot traffic at 2 weeks. Normal use at 4 weeks. First mow at 2-3 weeks once roots anchor — tug a corner, if it resists, mow. Keep pets off for the first 10 days if possible.

How much water does fresh sod need?

Heavy, daily, first 10 days — enough to keep the sod and first 2" of soil wet. Cut back to every other day week 2, then standard 3x/week through rooting. We program your controller and leave a written schedule. Overwatering after week 3 causes fungus — we tell you when to step down.

Do you haul away the old lawn?

Yes. Sod cutter strips the old turf, we pallet it, and it goes out the same day. You're not left with a pile on the driveway.

Can you repair patches instead of the whole lawn?

Yes — we call it sod patching. We cut out the dead area, amend soil, and lay matched-variety sod. Works well for pet-damaged spots, small dead zones, or after an irrigation repair. Usually $180-$450 depending on area.

Homeowners who hired us for this

Switched to Bloom Pro after two years of inconsistent crews. Same team every Tuesday, the lawn looks consistently sharp, and they flagged a sprinkler leak we'd have missed. Flat rate, no surprise invoices.

Melissa R. Weekly Lawn Maintenance · Carlsbad

Got three quotes for a front-yard drought-tolerant conversion. Bloom Pro was the only one that showed me the MWD rebate math up front. They handled the paperwork and we got $2,400 back. Yard looks incredible and the water bill is half what it was.

David K. Drought-Tolerant Conversion · El Cajon

They redesigned our lighting for the whole front yard and walkway. Warm LED uplights on the palms, path lights that aren't blinding, all on a smart controller. The house feels completely different in the evenings now.
