A DIY paver patio is a genuinely doable weekend project on paper. Lay a base, set the pavers, fill the joints with sand. In practice, most of the DIY paver failures we get called out to fix in San Diego trace back to the same handful of mistakes, and none of them are about laying the pavers themselves. Here’s what actually goes wrong.
The base is where DIY patios fail, not the pavers
The single most common problem we see on DIY paver jobs is insufficient base depth and compaction. Online tutorials often show a shallow base, a few inches of gravel, tamped down by hand or with a rented plate compactor for a pass or two. San Diego’s soil, much of it expansive clay, needs a deeper compacted base than that to stay stable, typically 4 to 6 inches of crushed rock (Class II road base or three-quarter inch minus) compacted in layers, not all at once.
Skimping on base depth or compaction shows up months later as sunken sections, usually near the edges of the patio or in high-traffic spots, as the under-compacted base settles unevenly under weight and seasonal ground moisture changes. Once a section sinks, the only real fix is pulling up the affected pavers, re-excavating, re-compacting properly, and resetting, which costs more in labor than doing it right the first time would have.
Drainage gets skipped, and it always shows up eventually
A patio needs a slight slope, typically a quarter inch of fall per foot, directing water away from the house and toward a drainage path rather than pooling. This is easy to overlook when you’re focused on getting the paver pattern level and looking good, but a flat or improperly sloped patio holds water after rain or irrigation overspray, and that standing water accelerates base erosion underneath the very pavers you just laid.

Paver base sand gets confused with polymeric jointing sand
There are two different sands involved in a paver install, and mixing them up causes real problems. Base sand or a thin bedding layer sits directly under the pavers on top of the compacted base rock, providing a level setting surface. Polymeric jointing sand goes in the narrow gaps between pavers after they’re set, and it’s specifically formulated to harden slightly when activated with water, locking pavers in place and resisting weed growth and ant intrusion.
DIY installs sometimes use regular sand for the joints instead of polymeric sand to save money, and regular sand washes out of the joints within a season or two, especially with San Diego’s irrigation overspray hitting the patio edge repeatedly. Once joint sand washes out, pavers can shift and rock underfoot, and weeds establish in the gaps far more easily.
Edge restraint gets left out entirely
Pavers at the perimeter of a patio need a rigid edge restraint, typically a plastic or metal edging spiked into the ground, to keep the outermost row from creeping outward over time under foot traffic and seasonal ground movement. Without it, the whole field of pavers can gradually spread apart at the edges, opening gaps that widen year over year.
This is one of the easiest things to skip on a DIY project since it’s not visible in the finished look, but it’s also one of the most common reasons a DIY patio that looked tight and clean the first summer looks loose and gappy by year three.

A small, flat, well-draining area with no expansive clay soil concerns is the realistic case where a careful DIY installer with a rented plate compactor and patience for proper base depth can succeed. A larger patio, any area with a slope or drainage challenge, or a yard on known expansive clay soil is where the base-prep margin for error gets thin enough that we’d recommend professional installation from the start.
